META-CINEMETRICS (White Paper)

Integrally-Informed Moving Image Metrics for Minimizing Risk, Maximizing Creativity and Profit, and Optimizing Viewer Experience

Mark Allan Kaplan, Ph.D.

ABSTRACT: This white paper introduces a new and potentially more accurate way of measuring the potential critical, financial, historical, cultural, and sociological success of moving image works using a comprehensive framework based on Integral Theory and Complex Thought to measure cinemetric, psychometric, and sociometric dimensions of moving image works.

Introduction

Todayís motion picture and television creative and business stakeholders are struggling with ever increasing costs and increasing market and delivery platform complexity in an industry that is and always has been a high risk endeavor. Many stakeholders find themselves caught between the pressure to minimize risk due to these increasing costs and complexities, and the reality that many of the most financially and critically successful movies and television series have been innovative in some way, and that with this innovation comes risk since what has never been done before cannot accurately be measured by the standard risk assessment tools which focus on past performance and current trends. Often, the use of these traditional measures helps to limit the very innovation and other creative elements which make a moving image work ultimately successful.

The core problem in this situation is a lack of perceptual constructs and accurate measures to help minimize risk without minimizing innovation, creativity, and critical and financial success; and it is this core problem that the Meta-Cinemetrics approach is designed to address.

Using a unique integrally-informed complexity approach, Meta-Cinemetrics offers moving image media creation and business stakeholders more accurate measures to help them minimize risk while maximizing creativity, innovation, and their projectís potential for critical and financial success; to help expand the communication and perceptual frameworks of all stakeholders; and potentially support and help influence the evolutionary growth of the industry and foster the potential creation of more innovative, successful, and integrally-informed moving image works.
